Edinburgh Bus Tour: Sat 12 Sept: with Chaplaincy

Calder Road –

  • commercial house for poor people last time, there are some flats as well
  • Before reaching Gorgie – Chester Avenue – 25 would stop here, and we can walk to ASDA 5 min, however 34 bus from campus would stop nearer to asder from the other side.

Gorgie Road –

  • would notice that the name on the same road change, this is because the city develop overtime

Ballgreen Road

  • murray field stadium – there’s an ice rink there as well

Corstorphine Road

  • there a bridge that below is the water of leith walkway
  • water of leith is the small river that goes through Edinburgh (like Thames in London)can walk to gallery of modern art
  • School of Blind “dolson” – look like palace -- Nearer to hay market

New Town –

  • biggest area of Giorgione style—a balance style and very symmetrical with second floor of the house is the high ceiling, the door of the house is blast with square door handle – its world heritage site, last time there would be an oil lamp at every doors but they take out already

George Street

  • high end shopping area, it used to be old day traditional shop, but these 10 years commercial has came in.

Queen Street

  • there’s a private garden which flats around the area would have the key to access. This is because last time the area are catered for the rich. This area are build because the lesson learnt from the old town. (little light little window)

St. Andrew Square

  • end of George street – has the main bus stop –
  • the garden here used to be private too. But it became public because no one really stay around here and most things are shops.

Old Town

  • thinner, taller, smaller gaps between building which was very dirty last time when they drain garbage inside.
  • Rich and poor live very near each other

Calton Hill

  • the ruin is not real, it’s just from some rich man who could not calculate his finance properly so he couldn’t finish the buidling

Holyrood Park

  • used to be hunting ground for royals last time
  • Radical Road – a walk way up the hill
  • Arthur’s Seat – look like lion sleeping

Holyrood Palace

  • In front, there’s scot parliament which created by Spanish architect – some ppl like some ppl hate this building because there is similar building that the artist also created in Barca.

Royal Mile

  • One mile connection to the Edinburgh palace.

St. Giles Cathedral

  • church of scotland
  • Worth visiting even though all English cathedrals are nicer than the Scottish one

South Bridge Road

  • Festival Theatre, Indian Restaurant

Braid Hills Drive

  • Lots of golf courses around
  • Good view to see city of Edinburgh

Morningside Road

  • Good small shop area – fish / bakers

Burntsfield Place

  • Charity shop
  • Waitrose – is a high end grocery
  • Peckhams – whisky

Burntsfield Link

  • Near meadows – a place where scot play golf since 15th century
  • Visit in spring – pink flowers
  • The modern flats we see could cost 850,000 GBP for 3br

Back to old town
Nichoson Square - Shops
Near to royal mile and near to the castle

  • National museum – near it there’s STA Travel
  • Greyfriars bobby dog and shop – the faithful dog known to stay with the owner’s grave for many many years
  • The elephant house – harry potter story
  • Grass market

Leith Road

  • John Lewis is in St. James - Top floor there’s glass view of Edinburgh
  • Play house – musical

Leith walk – no.25 comes here

  • Italian restaurant
  • Youth hostel
  • Chinese supermarket eg. Heng Seng

Commercial Street

  • Fish restaurant
  • “Shore”
  • Outdoor equip shop – there’s a shop in Rose St near princess st. also
  • Ocean terminal – bus 34 from HWU
    o Britanica Royal Ship -- Used to hand hongkong back to china

Crewe Road - Fettes School

  • Famous private sch that james bond went to,
  • High percentage of ppl in scot value gg to private sch and see it as a privilege.

MarineDrive

  • Sea shore nice walk
  • Lauriston Castle
we went to see the big picture of all these.. i just want to note down hahaha :P
